I am impressed with Karl Barth for many reasons. Not the least of these is his writing (but not completing) his massive 7,000 page Church Dogmatics. Say what you will, but few human beings ever accomplish something like that.I am also impressed with the work done by the translators. That, too, is a remarkable life time achievement.
Hey, I'm impressed by anyone who can read a 7,000 page work. That is no small achievement.
Recently, I've felt a little guilty. How can I be a true Barth fan boy without having read CD? Sure, I've used it some and read some of his smaller works and the interpretations of others, but not the whole thing systematically and in order.
I was waiting for Logos Bible Software to come out with their electronic edition. I like reading on the screen more than on the page, and this seems a perfect way to tackle CD. Sadly, though they've advertised it for years as in pre-publication, at this point they seem to be teasing.
So, last week I decided to do something about the situation and borrowed volume I.1 from our library. I figure at 20 pages a day, I can get through the whole work in about a year.
The next day I realized my error. I went and got Romans too. I'm reading it concurrently with I.1.
So far, so good. I've met or exceeded my quota every day, though I don't think I'll be able to sustain it when my thesis work gets going strong next year. It will take a life time of study to truly grasp Barth's thought, if then, but I think now is the right time to take it in in a broad swoop.
Later I'll post some thoughts and impressions after a week of being in Romans and "The Doctrine of the Word of God."

Logos is not teasing, Barth will be released some day! ;-)
What are you using for general Bible study while you are waiting for Barth? Do you use Bible Software?
Logos HAS to be teasing. I gave them my credit card info as soon as they said they were doing it. I've had to change it at least once because the card expired in the time I've been waiting around. I sent them an email once asking for any sort of estimate as to when it might get shipped and just got a snotty reply to read their website.
I use Logos. I've had it for almost 10 years. I've gotten a lot of use out of their journal collections, though that is not as useful as it was with online access and JSTOR being available.
